THE STABLE
Since Reggie Vanderbilt’s death in 1925, Sandy Point Stables has continued to serve as an equestrian center. For nearly four decades under its most recent ownership, the Stable has been a fully operational, successful Hunter Jumper boarding, training and show barn – hosting riding lessons for all ages, summer camps and pony rides for kids, and 10 shows annually which attract hundreds of riders from around the Northeastern U.S. and beyond.
Countless riders began their story at the Stable in its 121-year history, starting-out as children taking lessons on ponies and progressing to a lifetime of riding and showing horses. Some have excelled in intercollegiate competition, including on teams associated with nearby Salve Regina University and the University of Rhode Island, and several have achieved success and recognition on a national level. Others have gone on to become trainers themselves, even operating their own farms and facilities.
The Stable is not merely a building with horses. For generations, it’s been an important institution, deeply rooted in history -- a center of equestrian excellence, a school, and a home away from home for innumerable equine enthusiasts who’ve become an extended family through their shared dedication to their horses and their sport.
ALERT: In March 2023, several months after the death of the current property owner, the heirs to Sandy Point Stables suddenly shut-down all operations, forcing the removal and relocation of the horses.
For the first time in 121 years, silence and darkness have befallen the Stable: there are no horses trotting in the arena or munching on hay in their stalls, no ponies frolicking in the paddocks, no instructors shouting directions, no crowds applauding, no children giggling.
Demolition of Sandy Point Stables will destroy an important recreational resource and irreplaceable landmark of American equestrianism.
