INTRODUCTION
Sandy Point Stables in Portsmouth, RI was built by Reginald C. Vanderbilt, the founding president of what is now the U.S. Equestrian Federation. A majestic example of Gilded Age architecture, the building has served as a beloved equestrian center for 121 years.
Also, for 40 years the stable's lounge room has been home to Stable Sound Studio, the longest-operating recording studio in New England and a vital incubator of jazz, blues, folk/traditional, alternative, and other music.
ALERT: Following the death of its longstanding owner-operator, this irreplaceable historic building is facing auction and potential demolition by condo/housing developers.
